Lewis Hamilton to replace Michael Schumacher at Mercedes


British Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton has signed a three year contract to drive for Mercedes from 2013, replacing seven time World champion Michael Schumacher, the Formula One firm announced on Friday.

McLaren first announced that Mexican driver Sergio Perez would replace Lewis Hamilton in 2013, before Mercedes said "Lewis will replace Michael Schumacher who over the past three years has made a significant contribution."

Schumacher said he totally enjoyed his last three years with mercedes but the results are disappointing. He adds "I wish Lewis will work hard for the team to achieve the success we worked so hard for in the build up and I also like to thank the team for their trust and all the guys for their unconditional commitment and now I will concentrate on the next races."

Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn said "I believe that the combination of Lewis and Nico will be the most dynamic and exciting pairing on the grid next year and I am looking forward to what we can achieve together."

Lewis Hamilton currently in fourth in the driver's championship and won three races this season, in Canada, Hungary and Italy and finished on the podium in the opening three races in Australia, Malaysia and China.
